Commitment to Conservation GROWS.

International Antartic Centre and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve.

Willis Family Take Ownership of The International Antarctic Centre.

In December 2024, Christchurch’s International Antarctic Centre was purchased by the Willis family — the same family behind Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. Siblings Mark Willis and Kirsty Willis took ownership from tourism operator RealNZ, bringing one of the city’s most iconic visitor attractions into the care of a family long known for their commitment to conservation and education.

Located beside Christchurch Airport, the International Antarctic Centre first opened in 1992 on the International Antarctic Programme’s working campus and has since become one of the region’s most recognised visitor experiences.

The acquisition builds on the Willis family’s deep roots in conservation. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, founded more than 50 years ago by Michael Willis and Kathy Rangiwananga, welcomes over 210,000 visitors each year and plays an important role in protecting and showcasing many of Aotearoa’s native species, including kiwi, tuatara, kea, takahē and whio.

Mark Willis said the two organisations share a strong focus on conservation, education and sustainability, with plans to continue investing in visitor experiences while encouraging more locals to connect with the centre.

Tourism and industry leaders welcomed the move, recognising Willowbank’s trusted reputation and long-standing commitment to conservation and authentic visitor experiences.
